1. Is the diamond lab-grown or natural, and which lab graded it?

Get the answer in writing, with the grading report number. A report from an independent lab records the diamond's carat weight, color and clarity, and lets you check the stone you pay for against the stone you get. Ask whether the report covers only the center diamond or the accent diamonds as well.

2. Is this the price of the complete ring, center diamond included?

Some stores price the setting and the diamond separately, so a low setting price can grow once a diamond is added. Ask for one total for the finished ring at the carat, color, clarity and metal you want, before tax.

3. What is the return window, and is there a fee?

Ask how many days you have, whether the clock starts at purchase or at delivery, what the restocking fee is, and whether custom or resized rings can come back at all. A store credit is not the same as a refund, so ask which one you would get.

4. How long will it take, and can it be rushed?

5. What does the warranty cover if a diamond falls out?

Read the warranty before you pay. Ask whether a lost center diamond is covered, whether you must bring the ring in for inspections to keep the coverage, and whether loss or theft is covered or needs separate insurance.

6. Is resizing included, and how many times?

A guessed ring size is common with a surprise proposal. Ask how many resizes are free, what one costs after that, how long it takes, and whether the design can be resized at all, because full eternity bands usually cannot.
