How to Compare Lab-Grown Engagement Ring Sellers: 9 Checks

Two lab-grown engagement rings can look identical on a screen and be very different purchases. The differences live in the details a product page can leave out: whether the price includes the stone, what grade the stone actually is, who certified it, and what happens if the ring does not fit. Here are the nine checks that separate one seller from another, with the exact answer Beylora gives to each, so you can hold any ring you are considering to the same list.

1. Does the price include the diamond?

This is the first check because it changes every other number. Some sellers price the setting and let you add a stone afterward, so the number on the page is a fraction of what you will pay. Others price the complete ring. At Beylora, engagement-ring prices include the lab-grown center diamond and setting. Options start at $1,500 with a 2-carat center diamond in 14k white or yellow gold; the price depends on the configuration you select. 2. What is the color and clarity grade, in letters?

Skip the adjectives and find the grade. Color runs from D (colorless) down the alphabet; clarity runs from Flawless through VVS, VS, SI and I. Beylora's engagement-ring center-diamond standard is D color and VVS clarity (VVS1 or VVS2), with Excellent polish and Excellent symmetry. Compare those individual report fields instead of relying on a seller's general quality description. If a seller does not print the grade, ask for it in writing before you buy. 3. Who certified the stone, and can you look the report up?

A certificate matters only if it comes from an independent laboratory and you can verify it yourself. Beylora uses IGI reports for engagement-ring center diamonds. You can verify an IGI report number through the laboratory's report lookup. If you want to review the exact center diamond's report before ordering, contact us to ask when it will be available. A seller's own printed card, or a certificate from a lab you cannot look up, is a description rather than a verification. 4. Are the accent diamonds held to the same standard?

Ask about the small accent diamonds on an engagement ring, including any hidden halo. Beylora's engagement-ring accent diamonds are lab-grown; we do not state a color or clarity grade for them. The individual IGI report covers the center diamond, not each accent. Do not assume a center-diamond report also verifies every small diamond in a ring.

5. What are the return terms, in full?

Read four things: the window, whether it starts at order or at arrival, any fee, and who pays return shipping. Ours are simple. You can return a ring within 30 days of the day it arrives, with a 20% restocking fee on a change of mind and no fee at all if anything is wrong with the ring when it reaches you. The return label is prepaid. For a change-of-mind return, the optional $300 Rush fee is not refunded. Return the ring unworn beyond trying it on, with its certificate and packaging. 6. What happens if the size is wrong?

7. What does the seller do after the sale?

A ring is worn every day for decades. Ask what happens when a prong bends or a stone loosens, who you email, and whether the coverage depends on regular inspections.
