"Cheap" and "affordable" get used as if they mean the same thing, and for engagement rings they do not. A cheap ring saves money by giving you less: a smaller stone, a lower grade, a certificate you cannot verify, or a price that only covers the setting. An affordable ring gives you the same ring for less because the seller took out a markup. What does "cheap" usually mean in an engagement ring?
Four things, and any of them can hide behind a good photograph:
- A smaller stone. Carat is weight. A ring advertised at a low price is very often under one carat, and the photo does not tell you that.
- A lower grade. Color and clarity are graded in letters and codes. Most rings at the low end sit several steps down each scale, where color is faintly visible and inclusions can be seen without a loupe.
- A certificate from the seller. A card printed by the store is a description. A report from an independent laboratory, with a number you can look up on the lab's own site, is a verification.
- A setting-only price. Some sellers price the mount and let you add the stone afterward, so the number you saw first is a fraction of what you pay.
What should "affordable" mean?
The same ring, priced without the markup. Two things make that possible today. First, lab-grown diamonds: a diamond grown in a laboratory is chemically and optically the same crystal as a mined one, and it costs a fraction to produce. Second, buying at wholesale and setting the stone yourself rather than pricing the stone and the setting as two retail items. For reference, a loose 2 carat round lab-grown diamond at D color and VVS2 clarity was about $1,850 at a major online diamond retailer in August 2026, before any setting. Five checks that separate cheap from affordable
- Find the carat weight of the center stone. If it is not stated, ask. Anything sold on price without a weight is being sold on the photograph.
- Read the color and clarity in letters. D, E, F are colorless; VVS means inclusions a grader has to hunt for. "Premium" and "high quality" are not grades.
- Look the certificate up yourself. IGI and GIA both publish report lookups. Type the number in before you pay.

Does affordable mean it will look affordable?
No. To the eye, a lab-grown diamond is indistinguishable from a mined one of the same grade, and a D color, VVS2 stone is cleaner and whiter than most rings sold at several times the price.
