1.5 carat, complete ring: Flashpoint oval halo wedding set, 14k white gold, 1 1/2-carat lab-grown center, $3,499.99 on sale ($5,400 regular). We found no 1.5-carat lab-grown solitaire on its site.

What the listings state: the center weight as a round number (1 or 1 1/2 carats). The listings we read gave no color, clarity or grading lab for the center.

Wilson Diamonds, Provo

1 carat: Wilson lists lab-grown stones and settings separately. Its lowest-priced lab-grown stone near 1 carat was a 1.01-carat oval, G color, VS2 clarity at $500, and a Kelly solitaire setting for a 1-carat oval was $700, so the two prices add up to $1,200.

1.5 carat: its lowest-priced lab-grown stone near 1.5 carats was a 1.53-carat round, J color, SI2 clarity at $750, and the Kelly solitaire setting for a 1.5-carat oval was $950, adding up to $1,700.

What the listings state: carat, color and clarity for each stone. The stone listings we read did not name a grading lab. Ask whether setting the stone costs extra and which report comes with it.

Morgan Jewelers at University Place still listed the 1-carat lab-grown hexagon solitaire at $1,999.99 on sale ($2,850.00 regular), and its oval halo wedding set with a 1 1/2-carat lab-grown center at $3,499.99 on sale ($5,400.00 regular).

Sierra West Custom Jewelers names its rings by total diamond weight: its engagement ring page, read the same day, showed an ASHI 1 Ctw three-stone ring at $4,110.00 and an ASHI 1 1/2 Ctw ring with a 3/4 Ct princess cut center at $8,800.00, and those listings did not say whether the diamonds are lab-grown. Total weight adds up every diamond in the ring, so in both of these rings the center stone is smaller than the number in the name.
